n-Dodecyl-b-D-maltoside is a non-ionic detergent. It has a glyco-chain in its lipophilic site that is similar to the one in n-Octyl-b-D-glucoside. Using this detergent, Dr. Van Aken and others succeeded in solubilizing the active cytochrome oxidase from mitochondria. Its CMC value is 0.17 mM.

n-Heptyl-b-D-thioglucoside is an effective non-ionic detergent for the solubilization of membrane proteins such as n-Octyl-b-D-glucoside. Though n-Octyl-b-D-glucoside is degraded by b-glycosidase, thioether is not. This means that n-Heptyl-b-D-thioglucoside is effective for the solubilization of samples with b-glycosidase activity. The CMC value of n-Heptyl-b-D-thioglucoside is 30 mM. It is soluble in aqueous solutions at 4 ºC making it suitable for the solubilization of membrane proteins at low temperatures.

Sucrose monocaprate and Sucrose monolaurate are new non-ionic detergents that contain sucrose as the hydrophilic group, and caprate or laurate as the hydrophobic group. These detergents are designed to solubilize membrane proteins (e.g., enzymes, receptors and transport carriers) without causing denaturation. These detergents can be removed by dialysis because of their high hydrophilicity and CMC values. Due to their low absorbance at 280 nm, they can be used for the quantification of proteins by measuring absorbance.

Sodium cholate is an anionic detergent with 14 mM CMC. Since three hydroxy groups are located on a steroid ring and one carboxylic group is at the terminus of the molecular structure, there are no definitive lipophilic or hydrophilic regions in the molecule.
